Their tastes in fashion and attitudes towards life couldn't be more different.
Pinkie has pink punk hair, biker boots and hippy styles. April wears designer tops, skinny jeans and perfectly white trainers.
Being 15 is the only thing they have in common until they discover they are pregnant and both enrol at the Tinley Road School for young mums. What happens next is an emotional roller coaster of breaking stereotypes, unexpected friendships and courage.
Baby baby is a frank account of teenage pregnancy and highlights the realities of becoming a mum no matter what age you are.
Vivian French researched baby baby when working with a group of girls at a unit for young mothers in Bristol on writing project. They talked about their experiences, emotions, discoveries and feelings before and after becoming teenage mums.

A Heritage Lottery Funded project designed to get young people in the city more interested in local history, draws to an official close this week (20-25 June).

A Heritage Lottery Funded project designed to get young people in the city more interested in local history, draws to an official close this week (20-25 June).

Young people and staff at The Shore in Dundee’s city centre successfully applied for £24,900 of funding to get the “Histshorey project” off the ground last year. Since then the young people have been using art, drama and film to investigate the 200 year-old building's fascinating history and the lives of its previous inhabitants.

Many local people have offered their time to help during the project, giving their knowledge, advice and skills freely. One such person is Moyra Foley, who happened to notice the young peoples appeal for help.

Moyra knew from researching her family tree that her relative Joseph Pallas had once performed in the building when it was The Dundee Music Hall and she made contact with the young people to share her story.

Says Ruth Chalmers: “This discovery was especially exciting as, apart from William McGonagall, we had no idea about the personal lives of the performers and Moyra was able to tell the young people who interviewed her so much. She was even able to provide a photograph of him pictured with his burlesque boxing and comedy partner Cussick.”

Now, as the 14-month project draws to a close, young people from The Shore are set to recreate the comedy duo in a fitting finale and Moyra, who is a keen musician, has volunteered to accompany them on piano.

Other than getting young people more excited about history, one of the main aims has been to get the generations talking and working together and building mutual respect. From a young person's perspective this quote says it all; “This has made me feel that I have something to say that older people want to listen to.”

Events are running throughout the week. The exhibition is open to view Monday to Friday from 10 am -2pm, three theatre performances take place on the evenings of Monday (20th) 7.45-8.45 pm and Tuesday (21st) 7 - 8 pm and 8.30 - 9.30 pm and guided tours are available on Saturday afternoon (25th) at 12.30 and 1.30 pm.

The events are free to attend, but tickets must be booked for the theatre performances and Saturday guided tours. For more information call (01382) 435435

Success on show

Celebrating achievements was the focus of a fun evening earlier this month when young people, their families, friends joined staff at The Shore for a special event.

A number of those who take part in our range of activities received certificates in recognition of their regular attendance and completion of awards such as Dynamic Youth and Youth Achievements. The Shore's Commitment, Attendance and Dedication certificates were also presented and some of our younger volunteers were acknowledged with a new award. This is the DAVY (Dundee Award for Volunteering Youth) offered by Volunteer Centre Dundee, from where Philippa Little came to give out certificates.

The informal evening included songs from some of our regular soundsters, while visitors had the chance to take a look at displays and try out music equipment and put themselves on camera on the media stall. Those from the media group were able to share their filming exploits and the Histshorey members also performed on the big screen. (Catch up with the continuing development of this Heritage Lottery Fund project and all our other activities on the web pages.)

Rounding off our evening celebrations was another tasty buffet provided by the 'S' Word young people and staff.

Well done to all our Shore participants and it was good to see everyone on the night.
