Come and visit The Shore for the Scottish Civic Trust's Door Open Days 2010.

The building was built in 1828, by architect George Smith. The building has an older vaulted basement which may have been part of an older building on the site.

15 Shore Terrace is currently a venue for young people but is one of Dundee's "best kent" buildings. Built as an Exchange building with a grand pillared frontage it has had many incarnations as a music hall, Masonic Temple, City Assembly rooms and is perhaps best known as the old Winters the printers building.

Tours will be conducted by young people and staff about the history of the building as part of a project that is currently being run by young people at The Shore. The Histshorey project is funded by The Young Roots Heritage Lottery Fund.

Tours will take place between the hours of 1 - 4pm.

Please note that most of our building has disabled access but unfortunately not to our cellar area, which has stairs, uneven floors and low ceilings in parts.

For more information please contact The Shore on 01382 435 435

Now young people will be able to find out there is a lot more to their building than they thought with the project being launched with a tour by city archivist Iain Flett.

The Shore has been lucky enough to scoop a Young Roots grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to the tune of £24,900 to help them reveal the past.

Now young people will be able to find out there is a lot more to their building than they thought with the project being launched with a tour by city archivist Iain Flett.

Through partnership working with local heritage organisations including Dundee Heritage Trust, young people will investigate the history of the building and its surroundings.

The premises are thought to date back to 1807 when it was constructed on one level as The Exchange buildings. However subsequent extensions meant that the building has had a variety of uses throughout the years; from a Music hall and a Theatre, to a printers and Masonic halls. The basement of the buildings also holds some interest, with parts dating back to c.1690, the era of the Kings warehouse.

As the building sits in the heart of the waterfront regeneration project, the buildings locality to the old docklands and the proposed new docks also holds considerable interest.

During the project young people will interview locals of all ages, dig deep into the census records and create a bank of information about the building and its inhabitants which will be interpreted though art, film making and drama.

It is also hoped that eventually their findings will be open to all in the community by way of dramatised historical tours of the building.

Arts worker Ruth Chalmers said "The idea for the project has developed over several months, with questions about its history coming from the young people who use the old building. Everyone who comes into the building really loves it and although we sometimes have to work around its quirks it is a really great venue and has inspired this project. It's a great way to get young people interested in their local history and we are so grateful that the Heritage Lottery Fund agreed to support our young people to do this."

If you have any information which may be of use to the project, would be willing to be interviewed by the young people involved or would like to become involved in the project as a young participant please contact Ruth on (01382) 435435.

February's fashion show at the Shore in Dundee was a major success once again, this time taking place as part of Young Scots WOW Tayside day.

February's fashion show at the Shore in Dundee was a major success once again, this time taking place as part of Young Scots WOW Tayside day. The young people had been working on the project for months - planning, making outfits and rehearsing.

A group of girls from The Shore's Monday night art group "Blankety Blank" made the decision in Summer 2009 to work towards a fashion show and applied for a Young Scot Arts Action Fund grant.

This was to pay for a choreographer, materials to make clothes and to print tickets. When they found out that their application had been successful to the tune of £500 more people were invited on board to become models, work backstage, and control lights and music.

On the evening itself approximately 30 young people took part, from taking tickets at the door to creating the buffet for the guests.

Alex Cooper, assistant youth worker at The Shore said of the night, "The young people who took part did really well with the pressure of performing in front of the audience and the backstage crew helped the night go without a hitch"

Ninety people turned up to view the outfits made by the young people, including prom type dresses, theatrical bat wings and a dress made entirely from recycled magazines.

Audience members all seemed to enjoy the night too, stating that they were "Very impressed with the Shores own creations...great films too - very professional"

Local shops such as Missy Lala's, Arkive and New Look were also asked to contribute by lending their clothes for the evening.

The girls who initially started the project said "We hope that it will encourage both ourselves and members of the audience on the night to take part in future activities again. We would really like to do another fashion show!"

All financial contributions are to be divided equally between the Haiti relief fund, "make a wish" campaign and The Shore.
